Data Destruction

In 2005 the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) enacted new rules regarding proper data destruction relating to personal information such as names, address, and social security numbers.

Do you know if this rule applies to you (chances are it does), and if so, do you know how to purge data to satisfy the rule requirements (chance’s are you don’t)?

The recent FTC rules apply to just about everyone doing business these days, perhaps even you. Beyond the obvious candidates, the new FTC requirements extends to employers, landlords, automobile dealers, private investigators, debt collectors, and any individual who obtains personal information on prospective contractors and/or employees.

According to the new FTC rules, if you possess personal data within your workplace, you must make every effort to:

  • Burn, pulverize, or shred papers containing credit report information so that the information cannot be read or reconstructed.

  • Destroy or erase electronic files or media containing credit report information so that the information cannot be read or reconstructed.

  • Conduct due diligence and hire a document destruction contractor to dispose of material specifically identified as credit report information consistent with the rule.

Whether you are a small business, corporation, or individual who simply employees a caretaker or similar, Hidden Data Recovery Services can take care of your electronic data destruction needs.

More often than not, when you are ready to upgrade to new computer equipment, cost is a factor. A part of your total cost reduction could be reselling previously used equipment. As a result, you could be violating the FTC rules by not ensuring that your data has been destroyed. Failure to comply with the new regulations can result in civil and state penalties up to $1,000 per violation, and federal penalties can be as high as $2,500 for each incident. Violators may also open themselves up to class-action suits.

If it is your intent to reuse or resell the data storage device, then Hidden Data Recovery Services can perform a logical data destruction process utilizing any one of the several industry standards including, but not limited to:
